geri moved here to gainesville, fla last week; i drove down here friday. the i 95 corridor is a brutal drive especially in the dc area but there is traffic all the way down and it was hot! the temp here in gville is a little cooler but it is hot! cuttting over from i 10 to a local route 301 makes you feel you are in the deep south and then you hit gville and it is an oasis although without the boiled fried peanuts but still with the multitude of protestant churches.

on sat after so much car driving we hung around the apt complex which is nice and clean and heavily treed and shaded with 2 pools, a fitness center and tennis courts and some room to walk around. geri and i circumnavigated the complex, about a mile and then decided to walk over to the shopping center, a short walk; this was about 3 in the afternoon, poor geri looked lobsterlike in her skin color by the time we arrived at the mercifully freezing cold starbucks; later we ate an excellent vietnamese restaurant there, which was good and cheap, 11.95 for there special entree(some sort of chicken and orange thing); the shopping center had numerous places to eat but no grocery store presumably because no one cooks. our complex is very diverse with israeli's, asians etc. many of whom look like tired resident docs. inside it reminds me of my moms apt in fresh meadows which is to say nice and well built albeit a little cramped. we ended up renting two garages which are full of our stuff and certainly have no now room for a car.

today elias, the psychiatrist who's group i've joined, took us out in his old big lexus sedan and we ate brunch with his son(who has an i phone, very cool) and the son's gfriend. we went to leonardo's 706 , near campus run by a very fussy ny sounding owner who kept feeding us treats at no cost. while i was sitting there i felt something like a clothing tag scratching my neck; i reached around and pulled a 4" bug off of me, a palmetto bug; everyone said welcome to florida and the owner sent us a free round of mimosa's. the buffet was great, not the usual brunch of sausage and bacon but lentil and lamb stews, hummus and other mideastern stuff as well as various egg concoctions. later we went to wards, a local grocery store which aside from its large array of organic produce seems to have more beers and chocolates than i've seen in one place.

anyway it's a funky town, very green who's tallest bldg is 8 stories which is far taller than any other bldg and is full of crepe myrtle( a flowering shrub which comes in a multitude of colors).

well tommorrow i start work and i have a full am schedule but i'm not sure after that. geri also starts but we're not exactly sure what she'll be doing.
